William "Bill" WHITE

March 25, 1933 - August 15, 2018

Obituary

William White passed away at the age of 85 years on August 15, 2018 in Ashmont, Alberta through medical assistance in death. He was born March 25, 1933 on a farm in Manitoba. He was predeceased by his wife, Edith White; his parents, Abram White and Merinda Black; and his brother, John White. Bill is remembered through his friends, and survived by his children, Trina Burnett, John White (Scott Knarr), and Lisa (Ivan) LaBrie; his grandchildren, Kenny Burnett, Laura LaBrie & Chantal LaBrie; and his siblings, Vera, Roy, and Pearl.

Bill’s work history is made up of several positions at the CBC where he started as a radio technician. From there, he worked his way up to management, spent time as the Regional Director in Saskatchewan, followed by the Regional Director in Ottawa, and finally as the Vice President of Finance, which is the position from which he retired. He also served the community as a volunteer firefighter. In his later years, he contributed a hand by volunteering in many of the Boscombe Community Centre events that were held, such as the Hillbilly Jam.

Bill valued his experiences with his friends by always clearing time in his schedule for fishing and hunting trips. He was also an avid member of the St. Paul golf club, was a fantastic crib player, and always had a song lyric or a quote to share. He lived in his house on Upper Mann Lake, which he personally designed and built with his family.

The family wishes to thank all who offered their support and condolences. We will gather to remember Bill and the full life he lived on Saturday, October 13 at 2:00pm at the Boscombe Community Hall, Boscombe. Hopefully, when this is all over, we can smile. Cremation has taken place. To send condolences online, please visit www.gracegardensfuneralchapel.com.

To Bill’s family – immediate and extended. We’re glad Bill was able to end his life on his terms and we wish him well in his new journey. We know you loved him and will miss him terribly. We were so glad to have been able to visit him last month in his own home planning his summer.

From: Kay Rayment
Relation: Bill was an old and dear friend

As I write this note so many memories run thru my mind. What fun the White family and the Rayment families had. Bill and Jim’s hunting trip bring smiles to my face. You will miss him so much. It was a privilege to have been his friend. Hugs to you all.

From: Barry A Stewart

I had the pleasure and honour of serving with Bill at CBC in Alberta and always considered him not only a respected colleague but an inspired friend. Blessings to his remaining family.

From: Bob Nixon

I worked under Bill during his last year or two as regional director in Regina. This was during the time when the CBC moved from its various offices and studios around town to its fabulous new digs in Regina. Looking back I can see just how fraught with hazard such a move was – combiniing four previous disparate newsrooms – French, English, radio and tv into a single office, and all the rest of that expansion. Yet I don’t recall a single hiccup. No doubt, as the guy in charge of that operation, Bill’s performance impressed the folks out east, as he soon headed that way. While I never worked directly with him- being a junior reporter at the time he was several layers above my level – I do recall he had a great smile whenever he ventured into the newsroom. So my condolences to you.

From: Harold & Gladys Mark
Relation: A dear friend for many years.

To Trina, John and Lisa, we offer our heartfelt condolences on the passing of your father. We are blessed and honoured to have shared many memorable moments with Bill over the past 56 years. He was a brave man who chose to leave this world on his own terms. May you find peace and take comfort in cherishing your memories of happier days. Always remembered, never forgotten. May he rest in peace.

From: Ron and Ann Volden
Relation: Ron worked with him at CBC Calgary from 1959 until he moved to Edmonton, again from 1982 at CBC Regina until he moved to Ottawa.

Bill was a friend, and a mentor at CBC. He was a most gracious host and he was a hunting partner. Bill was well respected by people he worked with. We send our condolences to Trina, John and Lisa and their families.

From: Mike & Deanna Wildeman
