Obituary
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Tonia E Chrapko on May 8, 2013.
Traveler, dancer, avid reader, educator and seamstress, Tonia loved life. From a young age and without any help, she found adventure living in different countries around the world, not only teaching but also learning all along the way. For those who knew her, Tonia’s joie de vivre was readily apparent.
Tonia never shied away from hard positions, controversial projects or difficult conversations – for these, she drew on the endless energy that comes from being extremely principled and ethical. Her defining characteristic was authenticity.
Our “Tonia-Bonya” cared deeply about leaving the world a better place, and she was extremely focused on young children as the starting point for all good, big ideas and improvements in the world. Students from around the world remember her fondly for her passion and interest in their progress.
A celebration of Tonia’s life will be held on Saturday, May 18 at 2:00 p.m. at Two Hills Seniors’ Center (4903 – 47 Avenue, Two Hills) after which interment will follow. Afterward, Tonia’s family will host a meal in her honour, featuring the wine and mead of their first-in-Alberta organic winery and meadery called Birds & Bees. Tonia worked tirelessly in the family wine business, traversing not only Alberta but also taking the winery’s “Slow Food”/locavore/organic-food message around the world.
Tonia will forever be adored and greatly missed by her mother, Elizabeth; siblings, Evan (Irene), their children, Elissa and Annika, Shane (Susanne), their children, Chad, Cole and Victoria, and Xina; numerous Uncles, Aunties and cousins. Tonia was predeceased by her father, Victor; and grandparents, John & Eva Chrapko and William & Tillie Achtemichuk.
For anyone seeking to make a difference while also honouring Tonia’s memory, in lieu of flowers she expressed a wish to allow people to donate to STARS Air Ambulance or any of a number of other causes close to her heart, c/o 5626 – 51 Street, St. Paul, AB T0A 3A1. I am so sorry to hear from Tonia this way. I am so sad. We haven’t been in contact for years but life goes fast and we were very far from each other. But I do remember very well the beautiful and so smart young lady I met in Edmonton and then who came to visit me in France. Driving her old red Renault 5. So much fun we had together and so special moments we shared.
You might not remember me but I send you all my love. Benedicte

I worked with Tonia for the Alberta Government. She impressed me with her competence, professionalism and most of all her humanity. I am truly saddened.
