On March 9, 2024, Miss Shakira Ann Rose Large-Squirrel of Edmonton passed away at the age of 21 years. She is survived by her mother, Joanna Large; step-father, Lawrence Wood; siblings, Tyler Large, Cage-Ja Large (Sage), Jesse Large, Jayden Large-Castor, Kaden Squirrel, Kayla Squirrel, Kaiya Stelter, Hennessy Wood & Skya Wood; adopted brother, Kody Alook; nieces, Alena & Lyrica Adams; aunts, Marilyn Cardinal, Lorna Cardinal (Allen), Crystal Large & Trina Large (Vince); uncles, Steven Cardinal & Ryan Large; numerous cousins & relatives. Shakira was predeceased by her maternal grandparents, Lawrence & Verna Large, Harriet Munroe; uncles, Tyler Large & Emery Large; aunties, Katie Cardinal, Leona Cardinal, Violet Cardinal, Jacqueline Gladue, Ann-Marie White; a baby girl. A Wake will be held on Monday, March 18 (leaving Grace Gardens at 11:00 a.m.) at Ayiwakes Cultural Centre, Saddle Lake. A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, March 19 at 11:00 a.m. at Ayiwakes Cultural Centre, Saddle Lake. Sorry for the family’s loss. She will be and is missed dearly.
I worked with her since she was 14 and the last couple of years I had the privilege to be a person she reached out to when she wanted someone to visit. I always looked forward to visiting her, waiting to hear about what was new for her or how proud she was of her siblings. She was a giving person. Many times she wanted to give me clothes that she ordered off some site or telling me about giving to someone else that needed it more. I will always cherish all those moments.
I am unable to come to the funeral today.

Shakira, it was an honour being part of your life journey. I’ll always remember your mischievous little giggle when you knew you weren’t supposed to be doing something, the love you had for music and the sense of adventure you carried with you. Life wasn’t easy for you, but no matter the hardships you faced you continued to have compassion and love for all those around you. You will always be remembered for the ways your eyes lit up when you got excited and kindness you left behind. Sending love and prayers to Shakira’s family and friends.

My big baby girl there’s not a day that goes by that I never think of you. You’re always on my mind 24 7. I love you so much and I know you’re an angel watching over all your siblings, nephews, nieces, aunts and uncles. Honestly we are all not the same without you.
