Delia, Darryl, Dale and Marvin
Please accept my sincerest regrets on hearing of the passing of the patriarch of your family. It was an honour to have known him and to have considered him a friend. He represented himself with warmth, wisdom and compassion; it was easy to like him.
His authorship of a book regarding his esteemed ancestry is a true eye opener and a fascinating read; it was something of great pride to him.
More importantly, he was a leader in all things he undertook and has left his community a better place.

From: Reanna C-Jackson

Condolences to the Steinhauer Family, Melvin was very kind and treated me well when he was the SLCN Tribal Administrator. Every time I would meet up with him in public, he always greeted me very loudly by my first name…may he rest in eternal peace!

Relation: Distant relative

Please accept my/our condolences for the loss of your husband. It must have been so hard, not being able to see him in hospital or be with him. I was so very saddened to learn of Melvin’s passing. I will miss his presence, his stories, his wisdom. My wife and I met Melvin in 2002 when we came to Goodfish to find my great-great-great grandfather Henry Bird Steinhauer’s grave. By chance, we met your father when I went into a gas & convenience store to ask for directions. Colin kindly helped us to find the cemetery and after a lovely afternoon chatting on the porch with him and your mother, also introduced us to Melvin. Melvin told us about his book that he was writing about Henry Bird (Shawahnekizhek) and we talked about our common ancestors. Melvin also told us with pride about the successes of the Whitefish/Goodfish band such as the dry cleaning and garment facility serving the oilsands. I was very glad to be reacquainted with him in 2015 when his book was finally published. It was a very exciting moment and I was very happy for him to complete this important work. I was also very glad to be part of the Anniversary Celebration later that summer. Sadly, my wife was not able to attend, but my mother, Marlene, was glad to be part of that event as well. I was especially grateful to have had the time to talk with both Melvin and many of the people who were able to attend. Melvin shared many stories with me about his work with the band council, his childhood, and the many annual community hunting and fishing events that he was a major part of. I looked up to him very much and I will miss him terribly.
