David Paul PYSYK

April 6, 1955 - February 14, 2021

Obituary

It is with great sorrow we announce that Dr. David Paul Pysyk of Spruce Grove, AB, passed away on February 14, 2021, at the age of 65 years. For the past 11 years, David had fought with and beat cancer, but as he always said, “it was the cure that killed him.” His life after cancer was met with a long list of health challenges, but forever the warrior, his will to live was stronger. While he enjoyed all his time with family and friends, his last three and a half years so filled him with joy as he got to see the world through the eyes of his granddaughter, Logan. He was then over the moon to be blessed with another granddaughter, Emma, and finally his grandson, Arlo. David, “Dido”, was never happier than when playing with or cuddling one of his grandkids.

David’s talent as one of the finest entertaining and amusing storytellers was matched only second to his magical baking talents. Anyone who tasted his famous butter tarts or cookies was forever changed by his heartfelt appreciation. David was influenced by both his faith and Ukrainian heritage in his approach to his personal and professional life. A now retired teacher and principal, he positively impacted so many lives, leaving behind a legacy of life, love and laughter wherever he went. David will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 37 years Evie (nee Popowich), son Parker (Andrea) of Edmonton, and daughter Oriana (Morgan) Leithoff of Spruce Grove. He will also be greatly missed by his siblings Patricia (Randy) Ogilvie, Terry (Sherry) and Sonia (Barry) Newman, along with countless cousins, nieces and nephews. David was predeceased by his parents Paul Pysyk (1996) and Anne Nancy Pysyk (2014).

Scheduled viewing Friday, February 19 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Friends and family must contact oriana.pysyk@gmail.com to arrange a specific time. Funeral Rite Saturday, February 20 at 10:00 a.m. Both the viewing and funeral to be held at St. Anthony’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 6103 – 172 Street, Edmonton, with Reverend Dr. Timothy Chrapko officiating. Interment in Sts. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery, Sarrail, with Reverend Father Roman Shiyan officiating. Due to Covid-19 protocol we are heartbroken to announce that these services will be by invitation only. From: Cliff Moroziuk
Relation: Lived with David at St. John’s

I would like to extend my sincere sympathy to the Pysyk family. Although I have not seen David for a number of years I have met Terry at hockey games and he kept me informed as to how David was doing. My history with David goes back to 1974-75. I had the privilege of living with David at St. John’s Institute in Edmonton. David had my back when I was experiencing some challenges and for that I will be eternally grateful for his support.
He was always a fun guy to be with and I will never forget the trip I went with him and three others to Hawaii in 1978. We had a fantastic time. I hope everyone else cherishes the many fond memories they have with David and may God grant him eternal rest. Veechnaya Pomyat.

My condolences to the Pysyk families on your loss. I knew David during the younger years as a neighbor and riding the school bus for 12 years. May the great memories eventually replace the loss your feel now.

From: Lorraine Biittner
Relation: I was Head Secretary when Dave was Principal at Graminia School.

Sincere condolences Evie, Parker and Oriana to you and your family at this very sad time. I worked with Dave when he was Principal at Graminia School, we had great times working together in the office. He was an awesome Principal but he was also a great friend.
My thoughts are prayers are with all of you.

From: Fred Reinholt
Relation: I was David's Boyle School Principal and Curling Coach

My condolences to Evie and David’s siblings. I’m saddened to hear of David’s passing and about the battle he fought with his declining health. My time with David and the Pysyk family are memorable. David always had a sense of humor and was a very settling influence for our curling team in Moncton. We drifted apart as we pursued our careers but I always knew he would be successful in his service to whatever career he’d choose. Take care Terry, Sonia and Pat.
