Roy DAHLSTEDT

April 26, 1934 - August 21, 2024

Obituary

On August 21, 2024 the Dahlstedt family lost one of its very best. Roy Willard Dahlstedt passed away peacefully in his sleep. Roy was kind, funny, loving, wise and intelligent. The son of Willard and Jane (Campbell) Dahlstedt, he grew up in Owlseye, near St. Paul, Alberta. After graduating school in Ashmont, Roy started teaching at Little Beaver School north of St. Lina then taught for 4 years at Ashmont School. In 1956 he married Margaret Louise Knapp, his high school sweetheart. They moved to Lodgepole, AB to become the proprietors of “Roy’s General Store” for 4 years. Roy then attended the University of Alberta obtaining his Bachelor’s in Education and, soon after, his Degree in Educational Administration. He spent more than 30 years as a teacher and elementary school principal in Edmonton.
His love of life, tireless work ethic and insatiable curiosity led him to travel extensively, build a beautiful log cabin by hand, become a part time farmer, and design and develop a lakeside subdivision. He always felt that his true legacy, however, would be Mann Lake Golf Course which he designed, built with the assistance of many volunteers and operated as a non-profit for nearly 10 years. He loved this community and was proud to see so many people learn the joy of golf and have some fun. Eventually the golf course was sold and Roy spent his last years enjoying the love of his caring wife, Margaret and the joy brought to his every day by his daughter, Dixie and the countless family and friends who loved to visit at their beautiful log cabin in the woods. Roy will be missed by all who knew him.
Roy is survived by his loving wife, Margaret; 3 children, Dixie Dahlstedt, Dean (Barbara) Dahlstedt & Diana (John) Fischer; 4 grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren & 2 step-great-grandchildren. Roy is also survived by his 3 siblings, Merle Ewonus, Larry Dahlstedt & Glen (Lynn) Dahlstedt; 9 nieces & nephews; 10 great-nieces & nephews; a great-great-niece & -nephew. Roy was predeceased by his parents, Willard & Jane (Campbell) Dahlstedt; sister Janis (Gus) Buziak; & brother-in-law, Greg Ewonus.
At Roy’s request, no formal service will be held. Inurnment will take place at Willow Grove Cemetery in June of 2025. Cremation has taken place. Comments and condolences may be posted online at https://www.gracegardensfuneralchapel.com/obituary/roy-dahlstedt/ ‎ or mailed to Box 16, Site 1, St. Paul, AB T0A 3A0. We were so privileged to have met and known Roy and his family these past 2 years after we purchased the property next door to the Dahlstetds. I thoroughly enjoyed my visits, conversations and tea every time we were at our cabin. To the Dahlstedts, please accept our condolences and know that we are there for you in any way we can help. We will miss you dearly Roy! Rest in peace my friend.

Shawn, Lori and Frank.

From: Don and Norma Cole
Relation: Friend

Our sincere condolences Margaret to you and all of the Dahlstedt clan in the loss of your wonderful Roy. A lifelong friend to our Cole family, and especially the friendship of Don with Roy while building your log cabin years ago, he will always be a special memory in our hearts. Norma also has good memories while working in Edmonton Public School Administration with Roy as an Edmonton school principal. Roy’s good long life was filled to the fullest with family, and your memories of those years and times will always help fill the emptiness in your hearts.
