Richard ZAROWNY

Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Richard Zarowny of Fort Saskatchewan, formerly of Elk Point, on June 23, 2020, at the age of 71 years. Richard is survived by his loving mother, Josie Zarowny; brother, Lawrence (Helen); 2 nieces, 1 great-niece, 1 great-nephew & numerous cousins. Richard was predeceased by his father, Anton.
Richard completed his high school education in Elk Point, and attended University of Alberta, where he obtained his B.Sc & B.Ed Degrees in Industrial Arts. He furthered his education by obtaining his Automotive Tech from SAIT, and received his Journey Motor Mechanics & Welding at NAIT. Most of his working career was teaching Industrial Arts. He loved spending his winters in Parksville on Vancouver Island.
A private Prayer Service will be held at Grace Gardens Funeral Chapel, St. Paul, with Reverend Father Andrij Nykyforuk officiating. A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, Elk Point. Reverend Father Gerard Gauthier will be the celebrant, with interment in Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery, Elk Point. If desired, donations may be made to Canadian Diabetes Association or St. Paul Royal Canadian Legion Branch 100 c/o 5626 – 51 Street, St. Paul, AB T0A 3A1. Hey Lawrence, what a shocker-all our love and sympathy to your family. Our family had a big visit from Richard some years back in St. Albert. Hilarious stories of his flying adventures and mishaps- he was always cool in a dilemma, and jumped right back on that “bucking horse”, you could tell he loved flying. Richard was a school mate in Elk Point, I and my brothers often got our shoes soaked playing in your backyard pond, lots of great school memories with Richard. A great guy. Our deepest sympathy at Richard’s passing. We have many fond memories of times spent with Richard during and after our University careers.
Three memories stand out. One summer Richard and I were going to do the weekend golf tournament circuit throughout Alberta. Our first tournament was scheduled for Camrose and to that end Richard and I played 18 holes on the Wednesday pre-tournament. Four days later, in the pouring rain, and as we watched (more) avid golfers play in the tournament wearing rain slickers and galoshes, our amateur tour came to an abrupt end and we looked at each other and headed into the Clubhouse for a early Sunday morning brunch without even having hit a ball. We were both fair-weather golfers.
The second story has to do with Richard’s willingness to help out at a moment of need. After the engine in my first car seized up, and what with not having the significant amount needed for a new or rebuilt engine, Richard, as part of his continued interest in learning, offered to re-tool the engine for the cost of parts only. While it took 2-3 months, I was forever grateful to be able to provide Richard a learning opportunity (on how to rebore the engine cylinders and get the engine back to working condition. We are both sorry to have lost touch with Richard in the last few years.
The third memory has to do with Richard’s (strong dislike for the pink flamingos that are often seen as lawn ornaments. He bought me one as a birthday present and we arrived home to this lawn ornament resting in our front lawn. When it came time for his birthday, a few months later, he was presented the pink flamingo at a local restaurant on the occasion of his birthday. This ornament went back and forth several times until it disappeared over the years. Many other fond memories and good times spent together.
We trust that he is at peace.

My heart goes out to Josie and The rest of the Zarowny family. Richard and I worked together at Sturgeon Composite High School. He had a kind heart for so many students and I enjoyed getting to work with him and the special little conversations and laughs we shared together. He made my job as a counsellor a little better with the ways he helped our kids. I am so grateful to have known him. May he be at peace.

It was my good fortunate to work with Richard at Sturgeon Comp some years ago. Always enjoyed his positive and upbeat company and his willingness to take on any task with a smile. Extremely talented man with a great compassion for young people making their way through early life. If it were possible, I think he enjoyed the spring camps with Bev and her kids more than Bev’s kids enjoyed the class trip.
