Nellie HAWRYLUK

December 23, 1922 - June 29, 2020

Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Nellie Hawryluk on June 29, 2020 at the age of 97 years at Foyer Lacombe Long Term Care Centre in St Albert.
Nellie was born in Myrnam on Dec 23, 1922 to John and Rose Magdiak. She lived on the family farm South of Myrnam until she married Dmetro Hawryluk on Oct 20, 1940.
Once married, she moved to the farm near Elk Point where she shared in raising the family and farm duties.
In 1976 the farm was sold and she retired in St Paul. Before long she found she could not stay at home with nothing to do and started working at Robinson’s and later Macleod’s stores where she enjoyed meeting and assisting the many customers. During the last few years on the farm they started to take extended holidays with the travel trailer throughout North America. Later they enjoyed trips to Europe Mexico and Alaska. One of their favorite holidays was winters in Mesa Arizona.
She felt a need to be busy and loved gardening, cooking, baking, singing in a choir, picking berries (especially wild blueberries) and going for long walks.
She is survived by her sons, John (Joyce) and Ed (Irene); daughter, Myrna (Bob) Cormack; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Dmetro in 2008; brothers, Steve, Stanley and Peter; sisters, Anne, Mary and Josephine.
Nellie lived a full life, with ultimate grace and love of family and community and will be missed by all that got to know her.
The family would like to especially thank the staff at Sunnyside Manor in St Paul and Foyer Lacombe for their kind and compassionate care in her final years.
A Private Funeral Service will be held at Grace Gardens Funeral Chapel, St. Paul. Reverend Father Peter Haugen will be officiating, with interment in Union Cemetery, St. Paul.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice c/o 5626-51 Street, St. Paul AB T0A 3A1. To send condolences online, please visit www.gracegardensfuneralchapel.com.

To the Hawryluk families,

Nellie was a good friend of my Mom’s and I got to know her well. She was very friendly and it was always a pleasure to meet up with her. Once she moved from St. Paul I kinda lost track of her until she moved into Foyer Lacombe where our daughter Korley is employed at as a Rec Therapist. Korley enjoyed playing crib and doing Nellie’s hair on a weekly basis. Nellie will be missed both by Korley and myself. May the memories left with her families keep her close. R.I.P. Nellie.
