John SHEWCHUK

February 1, 1927 - July 21, 2019

Obituary

Mr. John Fred Shewchuk of Elk Point, Alberta passed away on July 21, 2019 at the age of 92 years. He will be deeply missed and forever loved by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. John was predeceased by his five older siblings, Ann (John) Dubeta, Pearl (Jack) Bidney, Stella (Zinia) Shewchuk, Metro Shewchuk & Harry (Susanne) Shewchuk; as well as his parents, Fred and Sophia (Habiak) Shewchuk.

John was born in Spedden, Alberta and in his early years helped his father at the Elk Point Livestock Exchange. As a youth he was involved in numerous sports, with a special love for golf and curling which followed him into his adult years. After finishing school in Elk Point, he relocated to Edmonton and started work at the CN freight office. After six years with CN he returned home to help with family affairs, and began to work his first quarter section of pastureland raising cattle. He would eventually go on to sell his land and purchase a second quarter near Spring Parks Lake where he raised cattle for the remainder of his working life.

Retirement did not come easy as John loved the outdoors and seeing wildlife on a daily basis, especially the many species of birds of which he was particularly fond. In later years his friends allowed him to continue that tradition by driving him into the country to enjoy the beauty of nature which had made up such a big part of his life. He spent much of his retired years surrounded by friends and family, always with a story to tell and a laugh to share.

We extend a warm thank you to the staff and residents of the Elk Point Heritage Lodge where John resided for the past two years, as well as the staff at the Elk Point Community Health Services for the assistance they provided each time he was in need. Thank you to those who helped in his remaining years as his mobility declined, requiring help around his home and farm, or rides within town and to surrounding communities. We also wish to thank the staff of Grace Gardens Funeral Chapel in St. Paul for their assistance in this difficult time.

John will be fondly remembered in a Memorial Service to be hosted by his family on Saturday, September 14 at 1:00 p.m. at the Seniors Recreation Centre located at 5010 48 Street Elk Point, Alberta. Cremation has taken place.

If desired, donations may be made to the SPCA or the Heart and Stroke Foundation c/o 5626 51 Street, St. Paul, AB T0A 3A1. To send condolences online, please visit www.gracegardensfuneralchapel.com.
