Henry LOEWEN

May 19, 1932 - March 19, 2023

Obituary

On Sunday, March 19, 2023, our beloved father and grandfather Henry Loewen passed away suddenly, at the age of 90. We are heartbroken to lose someone so special but at the same time we celebrate that our dad is at home with Jesus. He was deeply committed to God, his family & actively served his community.

Henry was born at the home of his maternal grandparents on May 19, 1932. He was the first of 9 children. Over his 90 year life he lived in Manitoba, North Dakota and Alberta. He passed into Glory on March 19, 2023.

He leaves to mourn his daughter Lois & Gord, Amber & Cody, Daughter in Law Janice, Natasha, Nathan (Sadie) and Krista, Son Brian and Rosella, Autumn, Ethan (Rholton, Brielle), Rhett & Elsa, Tori and Sam (Hugh), Max & Kennedy; son Glenn & Laurel, Logan, Morgan & Benjamin. Fiance June Arychuk. His siblings Anne Krueger, Bill (Janet), Helen (Vic) Hiebert, Rudy (Roberta), Susie (Alvin) Enns, John (Verna), Linda (Bob) Penner & Rose (Pete) Dueck. Henry was predeceased by his parents Andrew & Tina, son Vincent and his wife Elizabeth.

Henry was raised in a farm family, near Moore Park, Manitoba. While still a teenager he began working as a mechanic in Brandon, Manitoba. This was where he met & married Elizabeth (in 1956). In 1960, their first child, Lois was born, and the small family moved to Winnipeg where Henry attended seminary at the Mennonite Brethren Bible College. Upon completion of his Divinity training the family moved to North Dakota, where Henry pastored the Rosehill Mennonite Brethren Church. The family grew in size, Vince born in 1963, Brian in 1967. In 1968 Henry was called to pastor the Lakeview Mennonite Brethren Church in Lethbridge, Alberta. He pastored full time for 2 years. Glenn completed the family in 1970. Henry continued to work part time for the church while attending University of Lethbridge as a full time undergraduate student. Henry’s university training led to employment with Alberta Social Services, and as he climbed the management ladder, the family moved to Grande Prairie, Medicine Hat, Vermilion & St Paul. Henry concurrently used his ministry skills to assist churches in all the communities he lived. He also had a heart for summer camp ministry and served as camp speaker and in various support roles in camp ministry throughout his life. When he retired in 1992 he had ample time and a sense of God calling him and Elizabeth to serve at Belle View Bible Camp. Henry later volunteered with Victim Services for 12 years. In 2002 he and Elizabeth began attending the Glendon Evangelical Church. He provided leadership at the Glendon Evangelical Fellowship Church up to the time of his passing. In the past year Henry also enjoyed leading monthly Chapel Services for seniors at Chartwell Emerald Hills Retirement Residence (Sherwood Park, AB) where he was planning to move in May.

A viewing will be held on Friday, March 24 at 4:00 pm at Grace Gardens Funeral Chapel, St. Paul. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, March 25, 2:00 pm at the St. Paul Alliance Church with Pastor Calvin Andringa officiating. My thoughts and prayers are with Henry’s family and friends I met Henry when I worked summer jobs at Social Services in St Paul from 1988 &1989 and I did a lot of practicum’s there too Henry was our manager and a great one. Henry was always so kind and funny. Even though I was a student going into be a Social Worker Henry treated me with kindness and respect. I have such fond memories of him. We played having a secret friend for a week and Henry picked me out of a hat. One of the days he brought me a bouquet of Glads from his wife’s garden they were beautiful.
Rest In Peace and God bless you Henry it was a blessing that I got to meet you 🙏❤️💐

Henry was always there to listen. He was willing to help in anyway he could through his electrical & mechanical knowledge as well as his service to community. I appreciated his gentle soul, his practical way of serving God and his ability to stay current with some of the computer age. Condolences to the family, he will be missed.

We had the extraordinary pleasure of working with Henry at the St Paul and Area RCMP Victim Services unit for many years where he volunteered as one of our most experienced counsellors. Henry’s vast knowledge and understanding of grief counselling had no equal -He was universally welcome whatever the circumstance of individual or family distress. He exemplified the dignity Victim Services tries to bring to the community where victims and cultures of all faiths are served with equality of compassion and understanding led by volunteers of Henry’s incomparable dedication.

Those of us who served with Henry Loewen worked with one of a kind – the good kind.

Henry was a great example of a follower of Jesus. I feel blessed to have known him as a friend, brother in Christ, and a fellow servant of the Lord.
When we part with our dad, regardless of age, there is a void that no one else can fill. But our Heavenly Father (Henry’s dad) called for Henry to come to His presence. The joy Henry must be experiencing now is beyond our imagination, so despite your current sorrow, give him this pleasure in the presence of our Saviour. We can soon go too!
