George Smyl

March 4, 1941 - January 13, 2017

Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of George Smyl on January 13, 2017 ~ Dad, grandfather, businessman, baseball player, fisherman and lover of all things St. Vincent Lake.

George, born on March 4, 1941 in Edmonton, Alberta, was the eighth of nine children to parents, Ignacy Smyl (d. 1979) and Zofja Puzio (d. 1996).  George grew up in Goodridge, Alberta and in 1957 moved to Mayerthorpe to finish school and to start working with his brothers at Pioneer Motors. He met Joy Pfannmuller in 1959 and they married in 1962. That same year, they moved to St. Paul to join his brothers in the building of Smyl Motors.

George spent over 50 years in the family business, as one of the successful owners and operators of Smyl Motors.  A gifted carpenter, designer and builder, he was happiest at the lake fishing, cutting lawn, chopping wood, playing horseshoes and adding more little buildings to the property year over year.

He was the proud father of four children and eight grandchildren who all loved him very much. George is survived by his sons, Fulton (Donna) and Byron (Carla Daniel-Smyl); daughters, Heather (Ron) Rose and Sharon (Jeff Norton); his amazing grandchildren, Adam Smyl, Maia-Joyce and James Smyl, Nicholas, Jacob and Emma Rose,  Benjamin and Robin Norton. His siblings are Leonard (Leona), Bernard (Polly), John (Mary d. 1999), Florian (d. 2012), Mike (Karen), Henry (Marlene d. 1978), Joe (Maureen) and Eileen (Wayne) Junck.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Cathedral, St. Paul. Reverend Father Gerard Gauthier will be the celebrant with interment in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, St. Paul. Luncheon to celebrate George’s Life will be held at All Saints Ukrainian Orthodox Cultural Centre. My sincere sympathy to George’s family and friends.

George and I were in the last three year Emmaus program. We had a great three years taking this program in St. Paul, Alberta.

The last time that I saw George was when we graduated in June of 2002.

I have such wonderful memories of George from this very important time.

To his family I hope that all the wonderful memories that you have will help you all in the difficult days ahead.

God love and bless you all and keep you all always in His care.

Sincerely,
Valerie Ann MacKenzie

Dear family, please know that George will be missed by many; even friends like myself that you might not know or remember. I trust that the love and support of your close friends and family will help you during this difficult time. I will pray for you. I can only imagine how George’s heart is burning with Joy on his heavily route to Emmaus; meeting our Lord Jesus! He will be welcomed home with open arms. May this Joy help you through this difficult time. Sylvie

What I remember most from George was his presence, and his being present in the moment. He seemed to not value so much his outwards achievement that so many would only dream of. He struck me as an amazingly good man….seeking ways to become a better one. I don’t know whether George knew how he touched all of us… It seems that so often we are kept to see the impact we have on others! The good Lord bless you George, you and all your family.
