George Smyl

March 4, 1941 - January 13, 2017

Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of George Smyl on January 13, 2017 ~ Dad, grandfather, businessman, baseball player, fisherman and lover of all things St. Vincent Lake.

George, born on March 4, 1941 in Edmonton, Alberta, was the eighth of nine children to parents, Ignacy Smyl (d. 1979) and Zofja Puzio (d. 1996).  George grew up in Goodridge, Alberta and in 1957 moved to Mayerthorpe to finish school and to start working with his brothers at Pioneer Motors. He met Joy Pfannmuller in 1959 and they married in 1962. That same year, they moved to St. Paul to join his brothers in the building of Smyl Motors.

George spent over 50 years in the family business, as one of the successful owners and operators of Smyl Motors.  A gifted carpenter, designer and builder, he was happiest at the lake fishing, cutting lawn, chopping wood, playing horseshoes and adding more little buildings to the property year over year.

He was the proud father of four children and eight grandchildren who all loved him very much. George is survived by his sons, Fulton (Donna) and Byron (Carla Daniel-Smyl); daughters, Heather (Ron) Rose and Sharon (Jeff Norton); his amazing grandchildren, Adam Smyl, Maia-Joyce and James Smyl, Nicholas, Jacob and Emma Rose,  Benjamin and Robin Norton. His siblings are Leonard (Leona), Bernard (Polly), John (Mary d. 1999), Florian (d. 2012), Mike (Karen), Henry (Marlene d. 1978), Joe (Maureen) and Eileen (Wayne) Junck.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Cathedral, St. Paul. Reverend Father Gerard Gauthier will be the celebrant with interment in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, St. Paul. Luncheon to celebrate George’s Life will be held at All Saints Ukrainian Orthodox Cultural Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of one’s choice c/o 5626 – 51 Street, St. Paul, Alberta  T0A 3A1.  To send condolences online, please visit www.gracegardensfuneralchapel.com.
