It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard (Dick) Holeton of St. Paul, Alberta, on September 15, 2025, at the age of 81.
For more than 50 years, Dick served the people of St. Paul and Elk Point as a lawyer known for his kindness and genuine interest in others. He took pride in his work, often taking extra time to listen, to share a story, or to catch up with clients who had become friends. His legacy of compassion and service will live on in all who knew him.
Born and raised in Edmonton an only child, Dick's journey began at the University of Alberta, where he graduated with a law degree in 1972. His passions extended to theatre, acting, and a deep love for reading. Above all, he cherished the joy of spending summers at the lake with his beloved granddaughters, Émélie and Lillian. These visits were the highlight of his year, as he deeply cherished the time spent with his granddaughters, whom he loved immensely.
He especially cherished the close relationship he shared with his son Jonathan. Over the years, they built not only a bond as father and son, but as friends and companions. Together they built a lifetime of cherished memories—enjoying Fringe Festivals in Edmonton, dinners by the lake with the Bergerons, visits with his dear cousin Gail and family at the cabin, trips to Hawaii, and sharing countless evenings of cards and conversation.
Dick found his greatest joy in reading. He loved spending quiet hours on his boat at Lac St. Cyr with Shakespeare, a history book, or a good mystery in hand. Even as his health declined, his love of reading never faded—it brought him comfort and happiness right to the end.
In 1965, Dick met the love of his life, Lise Lefèbvre, in Edmonton. They married on July 5, 1969, and together built a life grounded in love and family. Their daughter Sarah was born in 1972, followed by their son Jonathan in 1975. In 1974, they moved to St. Paul, where Dick began his successful career with Rene Foisy’s law firm.
Despite facing health and personal challenges in recent years, Dick never complained and maintained a positive outlook on life. He embodied resilience, grace, and quiet strength, teaching those around him the true meaning of courage and humility.
He will be lovingly remembered by his children Sarah (Derek McCaughey) and Jonathan (Arla); grandchildren Émélie and Lillian McCaughey; step-grandchildren Michiru and Mazaki Okamura; sister-in-law Ruth Berthiaume; nephew Jonathan (Asha) Berthiaume; his dear cousin Gail (Larry) Kozak and family; along with many extended family and friends.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife Lise, his parents Stephanie and Richard, and his brother-in-law Jean Berthiaume.
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held in the summer of 2026 at Lac St. Cyr.
